Inside a Custom Rug Commission: Brief to Delivery

Inside a Custom Rug Commission: Brief to Delivery

A fully custom rug can feel like an open-ended process from the outside. In practice, it follows four fairly concrete steps, and knowing them upfront makes the whole thing far less abstract.

Step 1: The Brief

It starts with your project — the room, the palette, the mood you're working toward, and any dimensional constraints. We'll help you decide whether an existing Material Memory or Heritage design can be adapted, or whether the project calls for something built from scratch.

Step 2: Design & Material Selection

Next comes the specifics: color, size, pile height, and material — wool, silk, or a blend suited to the room's traffic and the look you're after. You'll review and approve a final specification before anything goes on the loom, so there's no ambiguity about what's being produced.

Step 3: Deposit & Production

A 50% deposit begins hand-knotting in our Bhadohi workshop. Standard collection pieces run 8–10 weeks from this point; fully custom designs may take longer depending on size and complexity, and we'll give you a realistic estimate before production starts, not just a best case.

Step 4: Balance & Delivery

The remaining balance is due before your rug ships, and we coordinate delivery to your project site from there. Throughout the process, you have a direct point of contact rather than a support queue — for a piece that takes months to make, that continuity matters.
