Wool vs. Silk Rugs: Which Should You Choose?

Neither material is universally better — a wool rug and a silk rug are built to do different jobs, and the right choice depends on the room, not just the look.
Wool: Built for Everyday Life
Wool is naturally resilient, stain-resistant, and forgiving underfoot, which is exactly why it's the foundation of most hand-knotted rugs, including every SUNDUS design. It handles daily foot traffic well and tends to hide the ordinary wear of a lived-in room rather than show it.
Silk: Built to Be Seen
Silk brings a sheen and softness wool can't match — its fibers catch light in a way that gives a rug real depth and shimmer, especially in a design's finer details. The tradeoff is durability: silk crushes more easily underfoot and is better suited to a formal, lower-traffic room than a busy hallway.
Wool-Silk Blends: Both, in Balance
Most of our designs use a wool-silk blend for exactly this reason — wool as the durable base, with silk used selectively to bring out highlights, veining, or a pattern's finer lines. It's a practical middle ground: most of wool's resilience, some of silk's visual richness.
Which Rooms Suit Which Material
A wool-forward rug is the safer choice for a living room, hallway, or anywhere with regular traffic. A silk-heavy piece reads best in a formal dining room, a primary bedroom, or anywhere it will be seen more than walked on.
